MISSIONARY HOMELESSNESS- WHEN NO PLACE FEELS LIKE HOME

C.   A n d e r s o n We recently visited America. Though I was born in Nigeria, my passport says I am an American. I love my country. But I have never felt like a “real” American. As our time back in the USA was drawing to a close, someone asked me, “Are you going home next week?” That is a hard question to answer. Where is home anyhow? Is it where I now live on the mission field (Asia)? Is it my passport country? They both feel like home. Neither of them feels like home. This feels like a kind of “homelessness.” This never quite fulfilled longing for home, is a type of missionary loneliness. It is a tough cross to bear. WE DON’T FIT ANYWHERE As missionaries do you ever feel as if you don’t “fit” in? You are not fully a part of your new culture. You are no longer at home in your old culture either. God wants to use these missionary life challenges to draw us deeper and closer. He wants to turn difficulty into a d...

THE CLUELESS CHURCH

By   D a v i d     P a m     M c Q u e l Thanks to the Collins online dictionary. clueless. (kluːləs ) adjective. If you describe someone as clueless, you are showing your disapproval of the fact that they do not know anything about a particular subject or that they are incapable of doing a particular thing properly. It seems to be an insult or rather too harsh to accuse someone of been clueless. Don’t even dare use it against the church. If there is an exposed wire in my electrical wiring of my house, it will spark every time both naked wires have contact. If I don’t know what to do next, no matter how many degrees I have acquired from Cambridge or Oxford Universities, it will be safe to say I was clueless. Many parents don’t really know what to do as first aid treatment for their kids. So if your kid has a high fever in the middle of the night at home and you have no access to medical care, you may become f...

THE PROFIT

D a v i d    P a m   M c Q u e l Our world is so obsessed with gain. Everything has to have some gain attached to it. So much that someone can be in a crowd of ten thousand adults and be so lonely. Gain in itself is not a bad thing. It is natural for man to seek gratification. A footballer wants to score the goal. A farmer wants to reap ample harvest. A student wants to score 100%. The market woman wants to multiply her capital. And a parent wants to see his kids become influential men and women. And when the goal is scored, when sheaves come in, when the scripts come with the highest score, and the market booms, the smile never ends. A dad or a mom stands heart thrilled and with goose bumps when his kid is nationally or internationally acclaimed and honoured. It just depends on what kind of gain it is. When reward is equivalent to labour, when the ratio scale balances between input and output, when gain wipes away the backache of stru...

THE DISCIPLE

D a v i d   P a m   M c Q u e l LUKE 15:1 “I tell you, in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous people who don’t need repentance.” It is incredible when one soul finds salvation. There is great rejoicing in the presence of God for such a change. It is not merely forgiveness of sins. It is not merely a heavenly executive pardon. It is the mercy of God given to a man. However, conversion as beautiful as it is not the final product. It is true that a born again person in Christ is: 1. A new creature in Christ 2. Totally redeemed from spiritual death 3. The new convert is God’s own legitimate child. 4. the new believer finds life eternal and everlasting rest. The highest desire in the heart of God is that the believer grows beyond his confession and the free gift of salvation, to become a disciple. A disciple is one who has adopted the teachings of Christ: 1. To live by it 2. ...

THAT LOST SOUL

D a v i d    P a m   M c Q u e l As soon as human beings form communities, alliances are build and people associate based on priorities and values. These values define who they are and what their choices are. As a result, they follow paths and patterns that feed their preferences. It is true in social relationships as it is in spiritual communities. As Israel strayed away from the covenant of Abraham, as the Old Testament began to whine down to its end, the voice of God went silent, because the grain of wheat must die to bring forth the new. The Levitical Priesthood became prominent since the prophetic ministry depended on hearing God. That prophetic guidance was lost. Israel eventually depended on traditions built around her past experiences with God. Even though some of these traditions contradicted God’s revelation knowledge. The three arms of spiritual leadership in Israel was the High Priesthood, the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the Scribes wer...
